How to plan your Unfitted Kitchen

It’s fun and full of options when you use furniture.

Here’s a few tips:

  • A simple planning technique divides our furniture into hero pieces – usually tall cabinets – and modular base cabinets. A combination of these in your plan creates the ideal balance. If you are easing your way into the Unfitted lifestyle, just one or two pieces will transform your kitchen. The base cabinets have the advantage when it comes to tighter spaces and alcoves.
  • Another design mainstay is your peninsula or central island. In most kitchens this works beautifully as the sweet spot where you make eye contact with anyone in the room while cooking. We would also aim here for a view from a window and towards the main table
  • Our dedicated worktop concept makes for efficient planning of your space. Keep the activities of prepping, cooking and serving close together, bearing in mind the sink and access to the fridge. With Unfitted furniture we generally think beyond the tired old kitchen triangle.
  • If you can, include a walk-in pantry for food and other items as this reduces the need for wall cabinetry. We do suggest a Plate Rack, a Circular Cupboard or Spice and Condiments Drum to make wall storage more effective, leaving valuable space for artwork.
  • Place your table in the arc of the sun, if at all possible, and find a good position for the dresser: great for storing fresh fruit and displaying other food, utensils and favourite objects.
  • Choose colours and woods to create your own style – see our customisation page.
  • All generations of the family can be catered for if different height countertops are chosen, the best option being the rise-and-fall mechanism. With this, any height (within reason) is available at the flick of a button.
  • Leave some space between hero pieces so you can enjoy their considered craftsmanship in the round.
  • As with a traditionally furnished room, the Unfitted approach enables a kind of visual poetry where the mix of art, furniture and soft furnishing creates a harmonious balance in tune with the architecture. When arranged in proportion to the walls and space, all these components create a sense of comfort and ease.

How to buy your unfitted kitchen

1. A single piece of furniture.

If you want to fill a gap in your kitchen or elevate your storage with, eg, our Spice and Condiments cupboard, just get in touch. We’ll give you a price and a beautiful well-crafted piece of furniture will arrive at your doorstep.

Our delivery team will carry the furniture into your home and help with installation. You’ll need to tell us if you want plumbing or electrical help.

2. The design advisory scheme.

If you would like to explore further options and more furniture, we will work out your layout.

You need to provide us with photos and dimensions of the space. We will create elevations and a floor plan along with costings.

If you have your own friendly builders or handyman, feel free to use their services for the installation. Otherwise our own fitting team is always on hand.

Cost: £1500 + vat

3. The essential design proposal.

If you have tricky architecture, an open plan living space or requirements you would like to explore in detail, we will come up with a detailed plan.

This includes elevations and a 3D drawing showing key items of furniture in your interior space, letting you see your kitchen before it arrives.

The service is valuable for interior designers, architects, developers and builders to show their clients. Direct customers keen to manage their own project beyond this point might also appreciate this option.

Cost: £2750 + vat

4. The ultimate design proposal.

This is a comprehensive design study. It is for clients with the kind of project that involves architectural changes such as removing an internal wall or adding a window.

The proposal includes a full plan, four elevations and two 3D visuals. As well as all cabinetry costs, material samples are provided.

Site visits are available at special rates depending on location. This service is also available to interior designers and architects. Some clients may wish to use Johnny Grey Studios to explore our custom kitchen design.

Cost: £5000 + vat

CUSTOMISATION

Furniture from UfK comes with a large helping of freedom of expression. While our designs are highly customisable, we also offer advice and guidance.

COUNTERTOPS

Timber worksurfaces for our base cabinets come in any length required. We offer up to 2.5 metres lengths in Iroko, Oak, laminated Beech and solid Ash. These come in natural, hard wearing Osmo TopOil finish. It’s food safe and can easily be refreshed.

Our end-grain work surfaces are 60mm thick and Maple. They are finished in hot vegetable oil which penetrates the timber and can easily be replenished. We recommend that our customers cut and press garlic on a separate board!

Masonry countertops, either natural or composite stone, are a good option, the most durable and impervious surfaces. For the island, peninsula and cooking zones in general, we recommend low-silica surfaces from Cosentino, especially Dekton. Caesarstone make a wide range of surfaces including non-porous concrete.

For natural stone, we recommend Surrey Marble & Granite (southern England) and Stonecutters (Midlands). We can provide drawings for customers who wish to purchase their own countertops. We advise having templates made before ordering.

COLOURS AND FINISHES

The world is your oyster when it comes to colours.

You can absolutely have any you want. If, however, you have the same tastes as us we offer seven carefully chosen colours ready-painted on selected items of furniture. This applies to all modular base cabinets and wall storage furniture, which are sprayed with a hand-painted finish on top. We use non-toxic paints.

Architects and designers will welcome the freedom to customise their colour schemes. Those wishing to paint their own cabinets should please specify a primer undercoat.

APPLIANCES

Dishwasher: Fisher & Paykel’s tall integrated dishwasher drawers are built into our modular base cabinets. This is a top-quality product designed in New Zealand. It has a loyal following among our bespoke clients who appreciate its innovative design and build quality.

The raised height dishwasher cabinet is an industry standard size. It is up to you which dishwasher you choose or maybe reinstall.

Taps: The sink cabinet works perfectly with any contemporary taps. We have found with our bespoke clients that most cannot manage without a Quooker for instant boiling, filtered and fizzy water on tap. Quooker is an energy efficient and safe system. Say goodbye to the kettle (unless you love it).

The sink: We have made this extra easy by installing in the sink cabinet a steel or ceramic Belfast sink, the choice is yours. Steel sinks are available in stainless, brass or copper finishes.

The fridge: For the bold and fun Frigidarium, we specify the larder fridge from Leibherr. This has maximum fridge space because there is no freezer, and is the perfect height for accessibility.

Extractor: Over the island and peninsula, we use a hood from the Norwegian company RørosHetta. Smart imbedded sensors measure temperature, organic odours, CO2, CO and humidity levels. The quiet extractor works to rebalance the indoor climate with optimal efficiency.

The hob: For something truly special, we specify TPB. This Spanish company is the market leader in invisible induction technology. Highly technical, TPB hobs look beautiful and you can cook, prep and serve food all on the same surface. They are made from a multilayered material that includes porcelain ceramic, aluminum, and bakelite and come in a range of colours.

As an alternative, designers and customers can choose from the wide range of induction hobs on the market, along with a countertop from by a stone supplier.

LIGHTING

We incorporate the best lighting equipment we can find throughout our furniture. In the island and peninsula gantries and condiments drum, we use Orluna. Durable, flexible and soundly built, these lights are adjustable and can be pointed across the countertops to ensure you don’t cook in your shadow.

LEDs at the back of the circular wall cupboard highlight its shape and provide a sense of weightlessness on the wall.

For the interior of cabinets such as the corner pantry and appliance garage, we use LED lighting strips hidden behind mouldings out of direct eyesight.
